TBN Booster, sometimes called Total Base Number (TBN) Booster, is an Overbased Detergents.
TBN (Total Base Number) boosters are additives used in lubricating oils, particularly in engine oils, to increase their alkalinity reserve or total base number. TBN is a measure of the reserve alkalinity of an oil, which indicates its ability to neutralize acids formed during the combustion process or resulting from other sources of contamination in the engine.
TBN boosters typically contain alkaline compounds, such as:
- Calcium salts: Calcium compounds, such as calcium carbonate or calcium sulfonate, are commonly used as TBN boosters. They react with acidic compounds to neutralize them and prevent them from causing corrosive damage to engine components.
- Magnesium compounds: Magnesium-based additives, such as magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide, are also used to boost TBN. Like calcium, magnesium compounds neutralize acids in the oil.
- Barium compounds: Barium-based additives, such as barium sulfonate, can be used as TBN boosters. However, due to environmental concerns and regulatory restrictions, the use of barium additives is less common compared to calcium and magnesium.
TBN boosters are essential in maintaining the alkalinity reserve of lubricating oils, especially in high-performance engines operating under severe conditions where acids can accumulate rapidly. By replenishing the TBN, these additives help to extend the oil’s service life, prevent acidic corrosion, and preserve engine cleanliness and performance. The specific formulation and concentration of TBN boosters vary depending on the requirements of the engine and the operating conditions.
